information regarding the Indian community generally.

It is the opinion of the Medical Officer, who is in charge of the examination of Indian Police and Gaol Warders that venereal disease in and has been common among them. For the first six months of the year 1921 the admissions were 8 Syphilis and 18 Gonorrhoea out of a total number of about 500 Police and Gaol Officers, but it is probable that many cases that did not prevent men from performing their duties were concealed. (f) In Victoria Gaol out of 1626 admissions during the

first six months of 1921, it was found that 90 were suffering from active venereal disease or a little over five per cent. Of these 75 per cent had gonorrhoea, while nearly all the syphilitic cases were primary. The Medical Officer reports that cases of secondary and

tertiary syphilis are rare.

Lai Chi Kok Prison was opened on the 17th March, 1920, and the average mumber of prisoners has been 165. From the 1st April, 1920, to the end of June, 1921, 27 prisoners were found to be suffering from veneraal discsse, a low percentage.

(g) Dr. Scott, the Government Bacteriologist, has conducted

for some time past a careful investigation of the question of congenital syphilie in Hongkong. He has been in charge of the Public Mortuary for the past 18 months. His report is as follow:-

The Bacteriological Institute,

30th October, 1921.

In spite of the idea which appeared to be prevalent that Syphilis was a disease widespread in Hongkong I was struck with the fact that signs indicative of syphilis in adults were comparatively rarely met with in the mortuary. I, therefore, considered that it would be both useful and instruct- -ive to undertake a systematic examination of children

dying
